June 11, 1946 ~ April 7, 2025

Resided in: Asheville, NC

Bill Kane died on April 7, 2025 at his home in Asheville, North Carolina. He had retired there in 2011 after several years managing wine and catering in the Boston area. He is predeceased by his parents, Vincent J. Kane and Mabel McCleary Kane.

Bill grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York and spent summers in the Adirondacks. He was a Cub Scout and enjoyed baseball, ice hockey, and later, lacrosse; during his summers on Canada Lake, he learned to love fishing. He attended First Presbyterian Church and graduated from the Poughkeepsie Day School. There he showed an early interest in drama, and was known for his kindness to younger students.

Bill graduated from Roy C. Ketcham High School in 1964, and from Gettysburg College in 1968. There he majored in Spanish and was lead singer for a band.

Bill’s kindness, versatility, photographic memory, and sense of adventure led him to work in a variety of fields: as a driver for the elderly in Poughkeepsie, a DJ in Beacon, New York, an actor in New York City and Santa Fe, a teacher in Rhode Island, a wine manager and a manager of wine and catering west of Boston.

Bill read widely and knew movie and Civil War history by heart. He listened to jazz, folk, rock and Big Band music, and with a new rod from his brother, Mike, learned fly fishing on the French Broad and Swannanoa rivers in retirement.

He was a devoted son, caring brother, and loving uncle. He leaves his brother Mike Kane (Nancy) of Naples, Florida, and his sister Barbara Russell (Bill) of Nashville, Tennessee; his nieces Margot Kane (Ian Fischer) and Sara Kane (Ed Nuñez) of Philadelphia, and his nephew Alexander Russell of Nashville. Two early marriages ended in divorce.

According to Bill’s wishes, no service was held. If you would like to make a donation in his memory, any charity that helps Asheville rebuild after Hurricane Helene, a food bank of your choice, Trout Unlimited or Habitat for Humanity would honor him.

Guestbook

  1. Bill was a loving and often protective older brother, a devoted uncle, and raconteur…I learned so much from him and will miss him for the rest of my days.

  2. Bill was not only a friend, but more like a part of our family. We met him at Lake Minnewaska, a resort in the foot hills of the Catskills, where my brother and I worked with him. We could talk for hours on end or just listen and enjoy music together when he would visit me in Baltimore. I still cry whenever I think of him and realize that he’s gone. Keeping him in my prayers,
    Chris (Dunphy) White
