Verna Rogers Black, 97, of New Leicester Highway, Leicester, died Sunday, February 13, 2000, at the Asheville Health Care Center.

A native of Buncombe County, she was daughter of the late Flora Rogers Duckett and was married to Leslie Black who died in 1970. She was a homemaker and worked at the Biltmore Country Market for about 10 years making dried decor, wreaths, candle holders and much more. She was a very talented person.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Alice Black Murray, one son, Clifford Black, one step-son, Frank Black, four grandsons, Gary Black and Bill, Roger and Larry Murray; one great-granddaughter, Catrena Reeves; one brother Carmel Duckett and one half-brother, Kermit Duckett.

She is survived by one daughter, Pauline B. Reeves of Sandy Mush Road; one son, Harold and his wife Pearl Black of Canton; ten grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren; sixteen great-great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; one step great-great-granddaughter; one half sister, Daisy Austin and one half brother Marshall Duckett of Sandy Mush.

Graveside services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday at Payne’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Her family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Tuesday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue and at other times will be at the home of her daughter, Pauline Reeves.
