Tommy Howell passed away on July 7, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Tommy was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished brother, beloved uncle, and an incredibly proud Papa. His greatest joy in life was his family, and he was happiest when spending time with those he loved. He will be remembered for his kind heart, quietly steady presence, generous spirit, and his wonderful sense of humor. Tommy loved to laugh, tell jokes, and make those around him smile. Whether it was a funny remark or a playful tease, he had a way of bringing joy to everyday moments.
Tommy proudly served his country in the United States Navy for eight years. After his military service, he built a career as a truck driver, a profession he enjoyed until retiring 21 years ago. His faith was an important part of who he was, and he loved his church family at Gashes Creek Baptist Church, where he was known for his quiet compassion, humble spirit, and willingness to help others.
Tommy shared an extraordinary love story with his beloved wife, Evelyn Howell. Together they built a beautiful life over 59 years of marriage, creating a home filled with love, laughter, faith, and family. Their unwavering devotion to one another was an inspiration to everyone who knew them.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Evelyn Howell; his son, Michael Howell and his wife, Kelley Howell and their daughter, Zoey Howell; and his daughter, Lisa Furdas and her husband, Greg Furdas, along with their children, Michael Furdas and Kara Furdas, all of whom were the light of his life.
When Tommy wasn’t spending time with his family, you could usually find him cheering on his beloved Atlanta Braves or the Miami Dolphins. Through decades of thrilling victories and more than a few heartbreaking seasons, his loyalty to his teams never wavered. Family and friends often joked that no matter how tough the season, Tommy was always convinced that next year would be their year. But nothing brought him more happiness than spoiling his grandchildren, who always knew they had a Papa who loved them beyond measure.
He is also lovingly remembered by his brothers, nieces and nephews, extended family, his church family, and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
Tommy’s legacy is one of love, kindness, service, laughter, and unwavering devotion to his family. He lived a life defined not by grand accomplishments, but by the countless everyday moments of generosity, encouragement, and love that he shared with those around him. He will be remembered for the smiles he brought, the jokes he told, the example he set, and the unconditional love he gave to his family.
A graveside service to celebrate Tommy’s life will be held at Gashes Creek Baptist Church Cemetery at 11 am on Wednesday, July 15 followed by a meal in the church fellowship hall. Family and friends are invited to gather to honor his memory and celebrate a life well lived.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Tommy’s beloved Gashes Creek Baptist Church at 308 Gashes Creek Road Asheville, NC 28803.
