Thomas Edward Cook, 83, of Fletcher, NC, passed away Monday, April 27, 2026.
Born April 26, 1943 in Buncombe Co., Mr. Cook was a son of the late James and Florence “Inez” Fie Cook. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Dalton Cook.
Mr. Cook was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was part of the Honor Guard, and was stationed in Alaska and in California, where he was on watch for 37 days during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He retired from Norfork Southern as Chief Clerk in Atlanta.
Mr. Cook loved the Lord, and was very generous. He loved music, cars, especially his 1933 Dodge, and was a big fisherman. He loved traveling to different places and going to the beach each year, spending time with his grandkids and taking them on trips. He even once asked a girl that Merle Haggard later married out on a date! He grew giant pumpkins, and rented them out to the Biltmore Estate, the first pumpkin weighing 547 pounds!
Surviving is his daughter, Kimberly Hunter and her husband, Chris; grandchildren, Avery and Cora; and sisters, Sherrie Cook and Ann Francis.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue, with funeral services following at 12:00 p.m. Pastor Roy Waldrop will officiate. Interment will follow at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Cullowhee, NC.

Tom was a wonderful neighbor and friend. He let us make a lot of pictures of my grandchildren on those big pumpkins.
So sorry for his sudden passing but we know that he and Peggy are with the Lord.
So sorry for your loss. Every year on Homecoming Day, right after lunch, Peggy and Tom would ride with me and Bill up to Pine Ridge Cemetery to be with most of my family who always went back before going home. Tom didn’t like to drive up the rocky, bumpy road and they would always hitch a ride up there with me and Bill because I had a van. This was always a special time for those of my family that came and Peggy and Tom. Old times were revisited and we shared a closeness with each other on this day. It was an extended family gathering. Tonight I am thinking of the Heavenly “Extended Family” Tom and Peggy are with tonight! I can imagine the joy of them being reunited with Family that are already there and the excitement in the conversations they are having! The Homecoming that they are at tonight (or should I say “Today”–because I don’t think there is any darkness up there?) would be something to behold!! I imagine them all gathered around the feet of Jesus surrounded by His Love! Your loved ones are up there cheering you and your family onward toward the goal and are waiting for you. I can almost hear them saying, “I can’t wait until they get up here to see all of this glory and feel the love up here!! Kim and family, prayers are for you in the days ahead. Please remember they are not ‘Gone”, they are just in a different place……and what a totally awesome place that must be!! May God’s Love wrap around you and your family.
Sorry for your loss hang in there
