Shirley Hawkins Farlow

Shirley Hawkins Farlow, 80, of Wesley Drive, Givens Estates, died Thursday, December 20, 2001. Mrs. Farlow was born in Buncombe County and was valedictorian of the 1938 Sand Hill High School graduating class. She was a daughter of the late Paul J. and Ruth Martindale Hawkins and was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Oscar Farlow who died in 1991, and also by a sister, Edna Cazel. She was a sales associate with Bon Marche and Ivey’s Department Stores and was a certified Braille transcriber. She volunteered her time and talents by transcribing mainly children’s textbooks into Braille. She was also an active member of Calvary Baptist Church where she was a member of the WMU and a former Sunday School teacher. She is survived by four sons and daughters-in- law, Bruce and Linda Farlow, Tim and Brenda Farlow, and Al and Betty Farlow, all of Asheville, and Louis and Cynthia Farlow of Gainesville, GA; twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Saturday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Buddy Corbin officiating. Burial will be at Green Hills Cemetery. Her family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Friday at the funeral home and request that memorials be made to the Building Fund of Calvary Baptist Church, 531 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
