Sarah Ann Hargett McKinney

Sarah Ann Hargett McKinney, 94, passed away on Friday, September 4, 2026.

Sarah was born on December 13, 1931, in Union Co., NC, to the late Jim and Mary Baucom Hargett. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Newton McKinney; sisters, Bessie Gordon and Ruby Griffin; and brother, Robert Green Hargett.

Mrs. McKinney retired from Square D. Following retirement, she spent many years working with the Head Start program. She also helped Newt with his business for many years. She was a longtime member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church and especially loved her time spent working in the nursery there. She also had served in the Buncombe Co. Rescue Squad Ladies Auxiliary. In her free time, she loved quilting, gardening, sewing, cooking, reading, and watching soap operas and Perry Mason.

She will be remembered as a loving mother to her sons, Jimi McKinney (Cathy), Phil McKinney (Charlene), and John Austin McKinney. She is also survived by her sisters, Betty Griffin, Connie Simpson, Patsy Lipe, and Frances Hargett; grandchildren, Chris McKinney (Robin) and Meghann McKinney; great-grandchildren, Colton, Elodie, and Carson; numerous nieces and nephews, and her beloved niece and caretaker, Alice Miller.

Mrs. McKinney will lie in repose at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. from Thursday, September 10, through Saturday, September 12. Her family will receive friends on Sunday, September 13, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Oak Hill United Methodist Church. The funeral service follow at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Glenda Hayner will officiate. Burial will then take place in the church cemetery.
