Robert Eugene "GENE" Butler, 66, of 131 Edgewood Drive, Wellington Estates, died Monday, March 13, 2000, in a local hospital.

A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Edna Jenkins Butler McClellen and Arthur Eugene Butler, Sr.

He was a former employee of the City of Asheville.

He is survived by his wife, Hilda Austin Butler of Asheville; daughter, Norma Jean Butler of Asheville; son, Gary Austin of Asheville; sister, Doris Fender of Arden; four half sisters, Peggy Willis and Carolyn Camby of Arden, Lois Barrett of Swannanoa and Ruth Ballard of Asheville; three half brothers, Arthur E. Butler, Jr. of Arden, Walter McClellen of Gaffney, SC and Donald McClellen of Arden; three grandchildren, Stella Butler, Bobby White and Missy Austin and two great-grandchildren, Samantha and Taylor White.

Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Thursday in the New Salem Cemetery conducted by the Reverend Keith Dockins.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 PM Wednesday at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian.
