Robert "Bob" Lee Kirkman III

Robert “Bob” Lee Kirkman III, 77, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2026, surrounded by the love of family and friends.

Born in Elkin, North Carolina, Bob enjoyed a life rich in relationships, lifelong learning, and meaningful experiences. He was a devoted husband and family man who found his greatest joy in spending time with those he loved. Whether traveling the world to experience new places, story-telling while shivering in duck blinds with friends, or dining on a dozen Pamlico Sound oysters with family, Bob drew people in, welcoming all view points and leaving people feeling welcome and valued. His intelligence, warmth, wit, and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Although a self-proclaimed “mountain boy”, Bob had a deep appreciation for the North Carolina coast and cherished the time he spent there. He found joy in nature, especially duck hunting in Manteo and fly fishing in the Watauga River, finding peace and contentment in the outdoors and sharing those times with friends. An avid student of history, he was particularly fascinated by World War II and Civil War history. Always ready to dive into a new non-fiction tome or travel to some off-the-beaten path historical site, Bob immersed himself in the events and people who shaped our nation. He was intentional about sharing those experiences with his family and grandchildren. Together, they traveled to Paris, Rome, Venice, Vienna, and Belgium, creating treasured memories. Friends and family will remember him not only for the depth of his historical knowledge, but also for the engaging conversations that often accompanied it.

Bob began his successful banking career in Brevard, North Carolina, with First Citizens Bank after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1970. Through his intelligence, steady judgment, and strong work ethic, he quickly rose through the banking profession, serving as Chief Financial Officer for several banks in the Southeast.

Bob gave generously of his time and resources to causes that reflected his care for others and his appreciation for the natural world. He volunteered with Manna Food Bank and Food for Fairview. At St. Paul’s Methodist Church of Asheville, he served through The Bear Closet, helping support the needs of others in the community. He also volunteered at the North Carolina Arboretum, assisting with the hibernation and movement of turtles, a quiet expression of his respect for the natural world.

Above all, Robert’s life was defined by his love for family and friends. His presence brought comfort, laughter, wisdom, and encouragement to those around him, and his memory will continue to be a source of strength for all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Kirkman of Asheville, sister, Carrie Donnell Kirkman of Cullowhee NC, a large loving family of many generations and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carrie Hobgood Donnell Kirkman, Robert Lee Kirkman, Jr., and family members who welcomed him into eternal rest.

A Celebration of Life for Bob will be held on September 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Eugene Catholic Church of Asheville North Carolina. His family will greet friends at the church immediately following the Celebration Service.

Robert will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched. His legacy of friendship, kindness, faith, and love for family will endure for generations to come.

In lieu of flowers, Bob’s family generously asks that memorial donations be made to either Manna Food Bank (www.mannafoodbank.org) or to a charity of one’s own choice.
