Rex James Penley, Sr., 81, of 59 Hudson Street, Asheville, died Friday, December 14, 2007, at St. Joseph Campus, Mission Hospitals. Mr. Penley was born in Buncombe County and was a son of the late Roscoe C. and Stella Rogers Penley. He was a Navy veteran of WW II, serving on board the USS Roy Hale. He worked for Southern Railway for 37 years and he was a member of VFW Post 891 and of the John A. Nichols Masonic Lodge #650. He was a talented bluegrass and country musician and singer and played a number of different instruments. He regularly participated at Mrs. Hyatt’s music hall on Brevard Road. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Ballew Penley; one daughter, Carolyn Parker of Asheville; one son Rex James Penley, Jr. of Asheville; one granddaughter, Shannon Austin; two great-granddaughters, Ava and Eden Austin; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Penley; and two brothers, Cecil Penley of Claremont and Max Penley of Black Mountain. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Reverend David Warren Officiating. Burial will be at Pisgah View Memorial Park. His family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
