R. Clay Chandley, 82, of Asheville, passed away on December 20, 2002, at Pisgah Manor Nursing Home. A memorial service to honor his life will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2002, at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am and the service will begin at noon. Clay was the son of the late Roy S. Chandley and stepson of the late Helen Reed Chandley. At the age of six, after the death of his mother Burla Hensley Chandley, Clay moved from Madison County to East Tennessee for several years before moving to Asheville. He attended Toccoa Falls High School in Toccoa, GA and Mars Hill College before joining his father in the family business, Johnson-Chandley Lumber Company, in 1939. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Clay joined the Marine Corps in 1942. He was a radar operator in the 9th Marine Defense Battalion. Attaining the rank of Sergeant, Clay served in the Central and Southwest Pacific from November 1942 through October 1944, and again from June 1945 to September 1945. He participated in the capture and defense of Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands; the consolidation of the Southern Solomons and the capture and defense of Guam, Marianas Islands. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in November 1945 from Marine Aviation Separation Unit One, MCAB at Cherry Point, NC. After WWII, Clay returned to Asheville and, in 1949, married Lytle Jones Bostic of Bryson City, NC. He was a member of the Buncombe County Baseball League, Asheville Toastmasters Club, Carolina Lumber Dealer’s Association, Beaver Lake Golf Course and a charter member of Etowah Valley Golf Club. He became president and owner of Johnson-Chandley Lumber Company, which he sold in 1988. His father, Roy; his mother, Burla; his stepmother, Helen; his wife of thirty-five years, Lytle; his daughter, Dianne Chandley Carter and his brother, Grayson Chandley of Morristown, TN, precede Clay in death. He is survived by his daughter, Karen Chandley Snow; his grandson, Chan Carter; his granddaughter, Caroline Snow and his special friend, Faye Bostic Weldin. The family requests that memorials be made to Multiple Sclerosis Society, PO Box 241535, Charlotte, NC 28224, (800) 477-2955.
