Opal Davis Rutherford

Opal Davis Rutherford, 85, formerly of 170 Vermont Avenue, Asheville, died Friday, March 15, 2002. Mrs. Rutherford was a native of Buncombe County and was a daughter of the late Emmanuel and Phoebe Burris Davis. She was married to James Allen Rutherford who died in 1995, and was also preceded in death by a son, Danny Frye who died in 1957. She was a former employee of Biltmore Manufacturing Company and was a member of State Street Baptist Church. She is survived by one son, Charles Penland of Pisgah Forest; two sisters, Bertha McHenry and Alida Fisher of Candler; nine grandchildren, Diana Hyatt, Sheryl Hare, Danny Frye, Billy Penland, Joseph Penland, Ray Extine, Don Penland, Eddie Penland, and Bruce Penland; fourteen great- grandchildren, and ten great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Sunday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Clarence Taylor and John Crawford officiating. Burial will be at Pisgah United Methodist Church Cemetery. Her family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Saturday at the funeral home.
