Millard Harding Maxey, 89, of Swannanoa, died Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Asheville Healthcare Center.
A native of Dresden, TN, he was a son of the late Cannie and Thelma Gregory Maxey. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Marie Maxey, who died in 2009, a son, Richard Maxey, and brothers Leslie and Leonard Maxey.
Mr. Maxey was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, having served with General Patton during WWII. He lived most of his life in Dresden, TN, and was active with many endeavors, including swimming pool construction and storage building sales.
He is survived by daughters Anna Dawn Creasman and husband David of Asheville, and Wendelene Mabery and husband Clyde of Greenville, SC; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Stella Coates.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Clyde Mabery officiating. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Grove Hill Cemetery in Dresden, TN.

I had the privilage of taking care of Mr. Maxey during the night at Asheville Health Care. I was honored to meet Mr. Maxey during his brief time there. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time.
