Mildred Barker Freeman, 87, died Sunday, November 23, 2008, at the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center. A lifelong resident of Asheville, Mrs. Freeman was was a daughter of the late Charles and Elsie Barker. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Major McKinley Freeman, sister, Virginia Martin, and brothers, Charles, Mack and Harry Barker. Mrs. Freeman is survived by her son, Michael McKinley Freeman and wife Carol Anne; grandsons, Michael Brian Freeman and wife Elizabeth, Allen McKinley Freeman and wife Mary Beth; great-grandchildren, Michael Allen Freeman and John Robert Freeman; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hensley, and Marjorie Freeman, and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Freeman was a member of Westwood Baptist Church for many years and was an active participant in the life of her church. She was a loving wife and mother, and she will be remembered for her devotion to her family and her love of quilting, cooking, and gardening. A graveside service for Mrs. Freeman will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Green Hills Cemetery with the Rev. Greg Metcalf officiating.     I was so sad to hear about Aunt Mildred’s passing. I will always remember her soft-spoken sweetness and the many kindnesses she extended to our family. She was a tremendous comfort and help to Dad after Mom’s passing. I will always appreciate that. I wish I could have been there for her funeral to express my love and gratitude to you all. You both have always gone above and beyond in your support of our family over the years of our parents’ illnesses etc. Our love and prayers are with you during this time and always!     Kathy and I were saddened to read of Ms. Mildred’s passing. She was a very precious Christian woman. We enjoyed so much our time of knowing her and Major at Westwood Baptist Church. We know that she is at home with the Lord now along with Major and many others who have gone before. We pray God’s blessings and comfort will be yours in these days.

  7. Mike and CarolAnne … I was so sorry to hear about Aunt Mildred. I can see her in the basement canning all the wonderful vegetables that Uncle Major had so lovingly grown. There are so many fond memories of her and Uncle Major and growing up surrounded by Freemans. How blessed we are to have known both Aunt Mildred and Uncle Major. We pray for your comfort.     I was so sorry to hear that your Mom passed away. Every time I see a flower bloom in the yard I think of her and how she loved her gardening and her house. I will try to continue the legacy in her memory. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. She was truly a wonderful Lady.
