September 3, 1955 ~ November 1, 2026

Born in: Aiken, SC
Resided in: Swannanoa, NC

Michael “Mike” Eugene Maddux stepped into Heaven to be with the Lord November 1, 2026, after a long weekend with countless visits from loving friends and family. Mike was born September 3, 1955 to “Big Nat” Nathaniel Maddux Sr. and “Abby” Avenelle Maddux, while briefly residing in Aiken, S.C.

Mike grew up in Asheville with his five siblings, Marilyn, “Busy” Lizabeth, Nathaniel “Nat” Jr., David and Natalie. He later called Swannanoa home. Mike is survived by his loving wife of 23 years and best friend, Carla Maddux.

Mike and Carla have a wonderful blended family. He was a caring and loving father to his children, Jeni Maddux and Austin Maddux, as well as Carla’s children: Ashley, Chris, Jeff and Mark. He was the best Pepaw to Elijah, Mya, Gracie, Zeke, Joe, Cole, Cooper, Abigail, Brinlee, Koi, Breslyn, Bex, Lyla, Violet, and Rose.

He went to A-B Tech and majored in Hotel and Restaurant Management where he found his love of cooking. He held two successful careers as a businessman, most recently being Asheville Fence, the business he built with his wife.

Mike was the hardest worker any of us knew. He poured himself into every project with determination. Whether he was laying rock walls around his mountain, or planting flowers and trees, he brought lasting beauty to the places he touched. Nothing made him happier than trading his cowboy boots for a pair of work boots and getting his hands dirty.

Mike leaves behind a beautiful legacy of his love and care for everyone he met. He will forever be known as the man who never met a stranger.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 8th, at 2:00 p.m. at his home church, Biltmore Church, East Campus, 801 Fairview Rd., Asheville, NC 28803. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:15pm, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Black Mountain Children’s Home, a place that was very dear to his heart.

Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting the family.

  6. I am saddened to learn of Mike’s passing. We probably met in the early 1970’s. I last saw him 3-4 years ago when he built a fence and installed a gate for me. Mike was a really good man and as the obituary said: “Mike was the hardest worker any of us knew.” To his entire family I extend my most sincere sympathy.

  7. To all of Mikes family, take care and follow in his footsteps. I have sent many customers to Asheville Fence, all were very happy with the craftsmanship of the company. I’ll miss seeing him at Home Depot. Prayers to you all.
