Maude Holcombe Penland, 101, of 49 1/2 Broad Street, Asheville, died
Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998 in a local health care center.
A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the
late Thad and Josephine Thompson Holcombe and wife of the late Lloyd
Penland, who died in 1961. She was a member of Oak Hill United
Methodist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Josie Murray and Hazel Burrell of
Asheville, Lee Fadden of Candler; two sons, Grover Penland of Candler,
Dick Penland of Horse Shoe; 8 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and
9 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held 2 pm Wednesday in the chapel of Groce Funeral
Home on Patton Avenue conducted by the Rev. Norman Hubbard.
Interment will be in Oak Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 pm Tuesday at the funeral
home and at other times will be at the home of Hazel Burrell, 44 Westgate
Road.
