Mary Elizabeth DeVore Netherton, 88, of Candler, went home to be with Jesus on Monday, August 10, 2026.

A native of Asheville, Mary was a daughter of the late Max and Martha Hannah DeVore. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Wilburn C. Netherton, who died in 2019.

Mary graduated from Western Carolina University and later retired from BASF in 1992 as their Quality Control Coordinator, enjoying 34 years of retirement. She was a longtime member of Brown’s View Church, serving as their pianist for 71 years. She also played for many years with Wilburn in The Netherton Family Gospel Singers, sharing their music throughout Western North Carolina and recording two albums. Additionally, she served as the Grand Organist for the Grand Chapter of North Carolina Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by sons, Danny (Vickey) and Ricky (Peggy) Netherton; grandchildren, Tara (Charles) Jaynes, Johnny (Janet) Moody, Diamond (Isaiah) Adams, Lauren (Jonathan) Burrell, Allison (Jason) Capps, 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Jo Warren, Maxine Snelson, Carolyn Heatherly (Phil), and Tammie Smith; and brothers, James DeVore (Darlene) and Gene DeVore (Joan).

Her family wishes to thank the staff of both Four Seasons Hospice and Groce Funeral Home for the care and compassion shown to Mrs. Netherton.

Her family will receive friends beginning at noon on Thursday, August 13, at Brown’s View Church, Candler. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. Those in attendance will be invited to speak to share a thought or memory of Mrs. Netherton. Burial will then follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brown’s View Church, 25 Brownsview Church Rd., Candler, NC 28715.

I know she is singing and shouting in heaven today and hugging the neck of your precious daddy.   3. Mary was a wonderful woman. She was so gifted. She was my mentor, friend. I will miss her so much. I know she is in heaven. She is no longer suffering. She is with Jesus and all her loved ones celebrating. My heart, my prayers and my love is with all of her family.

  5. Ricky, Danny and family; My deepest sympathy for the loss of your mother! She was so special and meant a lot to me. I will always have memories of when we were young, going to Enka Lake, BASF cookouts. I am sure you feel like me and Penny, that we were blessed to have awesome mothers. Mary was a blessing to all she met and loved her family & friends dearly. Days shared with her along our paths is a precious memory. Heartfelt condolences to family. Heavens gain see ya there Mary.

  9. Mary was such a sweet, Godly lady and I will always treasure what she has meant to me. She has been an encouragement to me in many things. I can just picture when she was telling me something serious and meaningful, she would widen her eyes, and kind of tilt her head and look at me , seeming to accentuate the importance of what she was saying. I loved her fun spirit and her laughter and the love she shared. I will forever love her and miss her.
    My heart feels such sympathy for all of her family that she loves so dearly, and everyone fortunate enough to have shared in her love.

    I’m so very sorry for the loss of this sweet, precious lady, but also thankful for the KNOW of HIS promise. I pray the family and many friends alike find comfort in that. She sure was a special person…I always loved running into her and the chats we would have. I always appreciated her sharing memories of my family with me.
