Lloyd Altschul, age 103, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, in Asheville, North Carolina.

Born on April 25, 1923, in Chicago, Illinois, Lloyd was the son of Philip Altschul and Rebecca Altschul (née Ziven). He was the beloved brother of Samuel Altschul (Beatrice) and Libby Lavine (née Altschul) (Harold), all of whom preceded him in death.

Lloyd began his studies at Northwestern University in 1941. His education was interrupted by World War II, during which he proudly served his country from 1942 to 1946. Following the end of hostilities, he took college courses in Europe while still overseas and accumulated enough academic credits to complete his degree shortly after returning home. He graduated from Northwestern University in 1947 with a liberal arts degree in interior design, a profession that became both his career and creative passion.

Lloyd lived a rich and remarkable life. Chicago was always his home until his final year, though he loved spending time in New York and Florida throughout the years. He was blessed with many close friendships and often remarked on how fortunate he felt to have shared his life with so many wonderful people.

Those who knew Lloyd will remember his warmth, wit, and gift for storytelling. He could keep family and friends entertained for hours with fascinating stories drawn from a century of experiences, adventures, and observations. Although it was difficult to outlive so many lifelong friends, Lloyd kept them close in his memory and spoke of them often. Their friendships remained an important part of his life, and their stories lived on through him.

Lloyd never lost his sense of humor. Even in his later years, he met life’s challenges with optimism, laughter, and an ability to find joy in everyday moments. His quick wit and engaging personality endeared him to everyone who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his life partner, Maurice Stewart. Lloyd is survived by his nephews, Sheldon Altschul (Juli) and Richard Lavine (Steven), as well as extended family and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

Lloyd’s long life was marked by service, creativity, friendship, resilience, and gratitude. His stories, laughter, and generous spirit will remain in the hearts and memories of all who knew and loved him.
