Asheville Butterfly TrailMajor Young was born in Baltimore, MD and was a son of the late Lawrence Edward and Sophie Mayland Young, Sr. He was retired from the US Army and had served in Korea and Vietnam. He was a member of the Asheville Gospel Chapel.
Surviving are his wife, Iona Ruth Richards Young; four daughters, Sara Brantley of Helena, Montana, Linda Beckmann of Bedford, TX, and Laura Boone and Nancy Ammons of Asheville; three sons, Larry Young, III and Paul Young of Tampa, FL and Nelson Young of Eastman, GA; four sisters, Margie Morris of Oraville, CA, Dorothy Bowen of San Bernadino, CA and Ruth Ward and Carol Lenz of Maryland; two brothers, James Young of Baltimore, MD and Paul Young of Wildomar, CA; and nineteen grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10:00 am Tuesday in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by a detachment from Fort Bragg.
His family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Monday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue and request that memorials be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
