In Loving Memory of Jerry Neff

Jerry Neff, 86, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, lived a life filled with curiosity, kindness, family, and a deep love of the natural world. A graduate of Duke University’s Class of 1963, where he studied Marine Biology and Biochemistry, Jerry went on to become a marine toxicologist and researcher at Battelle.

A Master Gardener, Jerry found great joy in caring for plants and sharing his knowledge with others. In his later years, he especially loved his time at Bullington Gardens, where he lovingly cared for the dahlias and took great pride in making them flourish. The gardens also brought him wonderful friendships and a community he cherished.

Jerry is survived by his beloved wife, Grace, and his sons, Dan and Paul, who were the greatest treasures of his life.

He will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his curious mind, his love of growing things, and the quiet joy he brought to those around him. Like the flowers he nurtured, Jerry left the world more beautiful than he found it—and his memory will continue to bloom in all who knew and loved him.

Jerry will be laid to rest in a natural burial at Carolina Memorial Sanctuary in Mills River, North Carolina on Friday, August 14th.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites those who wish to honor Jerry’s memory to make a donation to Bullington Gardens , a place that brought him great joy.
