Janet Hines White, 82, passed away June 23, 2026, at Givens Estates Healthcare Center. Janet was born in Greensboro, NC, to Myrtie Louise Byrd Hines and Charles Anderson Hines, Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Thomas White.

Janet White was an eternal optimist. No matter what life threw at her, she always managed to be positive. While this was a quality which annoyed her daughter in her adolescence, it was a trait of her mother’s that she loved and admired the older she got. Janet spread that good cheer and love until her last day. She frequently told her caregivers at Givens that they were beautiful or that she loved them. She was always grateful for anything you did for her and she never missed an opportunity to tell you so.

Janet did not meet her father until she was 9 months old as he was serving a second tour overseas in World War II. She found her parents to be glamorous when she was little as they were always dressing up and going to parties. She was the oldest of three children and the boss of and spokesman for her little brother, Andy. She was close to her sister, Nancy, in her later years. Her grandmother took her on a train ride cross country to California when she was a girl which was a thrill and a lifelong memory.

Janet grew up in Charlotte NC. She graduated from Myers Park High School and often broke into “Roll ‘em down, you Myers Park Mustangs” many years after graduation. She was voted “Wittiest” by her senior class at Meredith College and “a song for every occasion.” She often made up songs to fit any and every occasion and “We’ve got a lot of things to do. Fa la si da da” still pops into her daughter’s head from time to time.

Janet was a wonderful teacher who is remembered fondly by many children whose lives she was a part of. Her daughter had the great privilege of having her as her 4th grade teacher and her 7th grade biology teacher. Janet read aloud beautifully and expressively which made waiting at the doctor’s office easy due to her talents. She was the best mother who cared deeply and well for and was proud of her daughter.

She was funny and well-liked by everyone she met. She never met a stranger. She could and would talk to anyone she met whether she was in line at the bank or checking out at Kohl’s. She was an avid shopper who loved a good deal. She loved Christmas and held many Christmas Eve parties for her family and friends. She decorated for Christmas full tilt and often had multiple Christmas trees, a Dickens village, and numerous Snow Babies on display for the holiday. She and Tom loved their garden and always had a sliced tomato and cucumbers for summer dinners. She never turned down a Chardonnay and loved salmon prepared in a cast iron skillet a la Ina Garten.

Janet adored her grandchildren, Leah and Charlie, and loved any opportunity to be with them and tell them how proud she was of them. She was always telling them how smart they were and marveling at their accomplishments.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Crowson, her son-in-law, Eric Pommerer, and her grandchildren, Leah and Charlie Pommerer. She is also survived by her brother, Andy Hines, and sister, Nancy Hines Conway, as well as nieces and nephews.

  1. Janet not only told her caregivers we were beautiful, she told us we were kind and good. She was lighthearted, friendly, and deeply kind.

Those who love here will be happy to know her last days were spent relaxing outdoors in perfect weather, arranging fresh flowers, playing games with her neighbors and enjoying peaceful community.

My last memory of her is her pretending to be annoyed that her lunchtime slice of pecan pie was smaller than.usual. She loved her food and was a delightful lunch companion.

She had a glimpse of the parking lot (mostly obscured by a garden and courtyard), during lunch, and often commented on how she hoped “the buses” would move along quickly and not remain at a standstill.

Her face lit up.when she was asked about her career as a principal.

What a grand and gentle lady. We are all so lucky we knew her. Goodbye, dear Ms. White.
