Asheville, NC ~ James Silas Sconce, 94, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at Givens Estates Retirement Center in Asheville, NC.

Born October 13, 1906 in Sidell, Illinois, he was son of the late Harvey J. and Eva Fisher Sconce. Mr. Sconce was a graduate of Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA and received a B.S. in Agriculture from the University of Illinois. He was a research chemist with Hooker Electrochemical Company in Niagara Falls, N.Y. and in 1950 was named Manager of Research until his retirement. Mr. Sconce holds several patents for chemical processes and commercial applications. He was an active member of several American Chemical Societies and was a member and past commodore of the Youngstown N.Y. Yacht Club as well as a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon National Fraternity.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Sconce was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Garwood Ogilvie of Niagara Falls, NY and two sisters.

Surviving are his wife, Doris W. Sconce of Asheville; his niece, Frances Macdonald Williams of Green Valley, Ariz.; a step-daughter, Janet Ogilvie and a step-son, R. Gary Ogilvie both of Parkersburg, WV; as well as three step-granddaughters and several grand nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in the family cemetery in Sidell, Ill. at a later date.
