Jacquelyn "Vickie" Patrick

Jacquelyn Victoria “Vickie” Patrick, 68, passed peacefully surrounded by love after a courageous battle with glioblastoma.

Born on July 28, 1957, in Chattanooga, Vickie was raised in Canton, where she developed the warmth, determination, and spirited nature that would define her life. She graduated from Pisgah High School and later attended Haywood Technical College.

Vickie built a respected career as an administrative assistant to former North Carolina Senator Thomas Apodaca, where her intelligence, professionalism, and strong personality made a lasting impression on all who knew her.

She lived life energetically and fully. Vickie loved mountain biking, sailing, pickleball, Jazzercise, gardening, and especially the cultivation of orchids. A Master Gardener and active member of the Asheville Orchid Society, she was known for her beautiful gardens, sharp wit, and ability to make any place feel alive and welcoming. She also deeply loved animals and cared for many throughout her life.

Above all, Vickie loved her family fiercely. She is survived by her devoted husband, Ray Tobias; her daughter, Athalyn Sweeney and husband Michael Sweeney; her beloved grandchildren, A’ille and Lochlan, of Nantucket, Massachusetts; her brother, John Patrick and wife Cleta; her brother-in-law, Warren Tobias and wife Diana, of Truro, Massachusetts; and niece and nephew: Caitlin Martin and Zachary Tobias.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by her nephew, John Patrick.

Vickie will be remembered for her strength, intelligence, humor, independence, and the deep love she gave to those fortunate enough to know her. Her presence filled a room, and her absence will be profoundly felt.

Memorial arrangements will be shared with family and friends at a later date.
