HOMER H. SMATHERS CANDLER – Homer H. Smathers, 92, of Candler, died on Sunday, January 16, 2011. A native of Haywood Co., Mr. Smathers was a son of the late Hack A. and Jennie Ann Netherton Smathers. Mr. Smathers retired from Memorial Mission Hospital as a coronary care technician. He had more recently worked as a security guard at the Buncombe Co. Courthouse. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in WWII. He was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Hilda Young Smathers; daughter, Sandra Smathers, of Candler; son, David Smathers and wife Kathy, of Candler; step-son, George Wesley Smith and wife Judy, of Oak Ridge, TN; sister, Helen Brown, of Maryland; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery Chapel with the Rev. Ed Worley officiating, and military honors performed by the North Carolina National Guard. Interment will follow in the cemetery. Memorials may be made to Aston Park Health Care Center, 380 Brevard Rd., Asheville, NC 28806.

  1. We were so saddened to hear of Mr. Smathers passing. He was such a ray of sunshine when he came into our office. He will be missed. Please know that you are in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. We were so fortunate to know him and be blessed by his presence.

    I did not know Homer but I do know George Smith. He is the kind of son any man or woman would be proud to call ‘Son.’ I am sure Homer would agree.
