Gray Austin Burleson, 82, of 29 Deanwood Circle, Asheville, died Tuesday, November 28, 2000, in an Asheville hospital.

Mr. Burleson was born in Mitchell County and was a son of the late Samuel and Maggie Austin Burleson. He was also preceded in death by a son, Dennis Gray Burleson who died in 1998. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of WW II and was a former employee of the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Department. He was retired as an investigator with the Buncombe County Department of Social Services. He was a member, former deacon and Sunday school teacher at West Asheville Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Madge Young Burleson; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Annette Burleson of Hendersonville, and three grandchildren, Wesley, Caleb and Christopher.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Friday at West Asheville Baptist Church with the Revs. Ken Lewis and David Tucker and Dr. James H. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

His family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service and request that memorials be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas offering, West Asheville Baptist Church, 926 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806 or to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 16, Asheville, NC 28802.

Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is in charge of the arrangements.
