Gordon Greenwood Israel, 83, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 1, 2003. He was the son of the late James M. and Julia Bishop Israel. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mamie Israel and Margie Israel Galyean and one brother, Paul J. Israel.
Mr. Israel was born in Buncombe County on April 16, 1920. He served in the US Army during WWII in the South Pacific. He was a self-employed plumber and a member of Reeves Chapel United Methodist Church.
His wife, the love of his life, Ruth Ball Masters Israel, survives him. He is also survived by a daughter, Linda Buckner; a granddaughter, Amanda Buckner; a sister, Mary “Pete” Israel, all of Asheville; a brother, Walter A. “Bud” Israel of Weaverville; seven step-children, Joe Black and Larry Black of Arden, Betty Hood of Enka, Sonja Ashby of Lexington, NC, Cecil Masters, Sr. and Pauline M. Rhodarmer of Asheville and Joyce M. Duckett of Woodfin; numerous step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be 11:00 am Monday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with the Revs. Enoch Ball, Jr. and Bob Hagan officiating. Military Rites will be provided by the Buncombe County Veterans Council. Pallbearers will be Joe Black, Larry Black, Greg Israel, James “Rocky” Hood, Danny Buckner and James Masters.
His family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 pm Sunday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. Flowers will be accepted and appreciated or donations may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to the nurses and staff of Hospice Solace Center for the care of their loved one.

To the family of Gordon Israel; I look at this website every day because my grandfather pased away a little over a month ago. I never met Mr. Israel but I am sure he was a great man! My thoughts and prayers are with you as you go thru what was the hardest time in my life. God bless you all!
