Gene Clarence “Porky” Roberts, 84, of Asheville, died Friday, March 2, 2007, at the VA Medical Center. A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Joseph Hobart and Annie Haney Roberts. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lois Marvin Roberts, who died in 2003. Mr. Roberts was a US Army veteran of WWII, served at the Battle of the Bulge and was a POW survivor. He was a retired 18 wheeler truck driver who was an avid sports fan including NASCAR racing and loved bull dogs. Survivors include a daughter, Debra Braese and husband Paul of Weaverville; three sons, Jerry Roberts and wife Richelle Vogt of Asheville, Lonnie Roberts of Hendersonville and Dennis Roberts and his wife Martha Smith Roberts of Fletcher; grandchildren, Rachael Roberts, Hanna Roberts, Coty Roberts, Lorie Stricklin, Tim Roberts, Daniel Roberts, Rick Kovacs, Dennis Eugene Roberts, Jr. and Denise Roberts; four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Monday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Reverend Roger Kuykendall officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Honor Guard at Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery with Tommy Williams, Timothy Roberts, Daniel Roberts, Ricky Kovacs, Dennis Roberts, Jr. and Jerry Roberts serving as pall bearers. His family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 pm Sunday at the funeral home and at other times will be at the home of Debra Braese. Memorials may be made to the Asheville Humane Society, 72 Lees Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

To Jerry&Richelle and all the Roberts family we are very sorry about the loss of ‘Porkey’ I no the loss is very hard Jerry if you need me at any time please call.Jerry & Richelle i no you both were with ‘Porkey’ until the end and stayed up at his apt.a long time taking care of him. Richelle i would like to thank you for all you have done not only for ‘Porkey’ But for all you done for Louise and Bill and helping Jerry with the loss of all of them.

  4. My condolences to the entire family. I’m sorry to say that I don’t remember the last time I saw Porky…BUT I do remember, during my youth growing up in Asheville, that he always had a smile on his face and he was super sweet to me and my brother. May he rest in peace.
