Evielyn Riddle Martin Asheville ~ Evielyn Hilsman Riddle Martin, 103, of Asheville, died Monday, March 16, 2009 at John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center. A native of Charleston, SC, she was a daughter of the late Claude Barron and Mabel Hilsman James. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph Bennett Riddle, Jr., who died in 1948, her second husband, William Mitchell Martin, who died in 1979 and one son, James Hilsman Riddle. Evielyn graduated from Bessie Tift College in 1927 and later received her Masters degree in liberal arts from the University of Alabama. A model for lifelong learning, Evielyn continued to study for 27 years following her retirement from high school teaching in 1970. During this period, she audited nearly every class that the University of Western Alabama, in Livingston, AL, offers in English, French, Spanish, history, literature and political science. She achieved numerous honors at the University of Western Alabama. In 1997, she was recognized by induction into the University's most exclusive society, the Society of the Golden Key, an honor reserved for alumni who have brought distinction upon the university by the quality of their lives and their achievements. She was also a member of the Phi Kappa Phi and Omicron Delta Kappa sororities. She is survived by her son, Joseph Bennett Riddle, III and his wife, Margaret, of Asheville; three grandchildren, Laura Riddle Forbes, Mary Kathleen Riddle and Andrew Joseph Riddle and one great-grandchild, Jacob Alexander Jay. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on Friday, March 20, 2009 in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with the Reverend Dr. Ed Graham officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to CarePartners Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
