Daw Nan Thwae

Daw Nan Thwae (Daw Dhammasi), 75, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina.

She was born on July 16, 1950, in Burma to the late U Hoke Kyein and Daw Than Tyi. She retired from Yangon University in 2000 after teaching for more than 26 years.

She is survived by her husband, U Kyaw Htay; her son, Than Htay Oo (Mary San Oo); her daughter, Sandar Kyaw Leung (Jeffery Leung); her grandchildren, David Leung, Isabell Leung, and Minn Myat Oo; her sister, Daw Khin Ohn Myint; and her brother, U Ko Ko Aye. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, U Thein Win.

It was truly a blessing to have had her in our lives. She was strong-minded, deeply mindful, and unwavering in her convictions. We will always carry her strength, wisdom, and compassion with us. Through her dedication to meditation and the practice of Dhamma, she touched many lives around the world. Her legacy of loving-kindness, generosity, and inner peace will continue to inspire all who knew her.

A Burmese memorial service for Daw Nan Thwae will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Serenity Insight Meditation Center, 211 Bee Ridge Rd, Asheville, NC 28803. Family and friends are invited to visit with the family from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Lunch will be served for everyone, in accordance with her wishes, as we celebrate what would have been her birthday. Burial will be private at Groce Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the Satipatthana Vipassana Association (SVA) via Zelle at chanmyay.sva@gmail.com. Your generosity will help continue the meditation teachings and the Dhamma that were so dear to her heart.
