Resided in:
Asheville, NC
Darryl Reed Collins, 43, of Asheville, died unexpectedly on Sunday, October 4, 2009, at his parent’s home.
Darryl was born in Buncombe Co., and was a son of J. Howard and Elaine Cole Collins. Darryl loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting at Beaver Lake since he was 4 years old. He attended Jones Elementary School and graduated from Asheville High School. He dearly loved animals and working with children.
His father worked for 33 years with Southern Bell. When his father retired, he started his own telephone company, Telephone Service and Equipment, working out of a building, which he still owns, at 45 Broadway. Darryl became the best trained and most reliable technician there, and eventually became the co-owner until the business was sold in 1998.
Darryl completed several training courses on electronic systems, including their primary franchise, Samsung. Their company installed many notable telephone systems, including for movies filmed in this area including: “Richie Rich,” “My Fellow Americans,” “Last of the Mohicans,” “28 Days,” “Patch Adams,” and “Song Catcher.”
Following the sale of the telephone business, Darryl continued working with his father with his rental properties.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a daughter, Catlin Clopton; two sisters, Cyndi Collins and Jan Kowalezyk, and a brother, Steve Graham Collins; and nieces and nephews, DeAnna, Stephen, and Chad (Leslie) Collins, and Leah and Davinia Amiri.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Friday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Wendell Brittain and Bobby Brittain officiating. Private interment will be at Lewis Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Aaron Kowalezyk, Russell Luther, Garry Reinhardt, Brian Reed, Chad Collins, and Stephen Collins, Jr.
The family will receive friends following the service and at other times will be at the home of Cyndi Collins, 90 Reems Creek Road, Weaverville.
Memorials may be made to AMVETS Scholarship Fund, 1 Cordell Court, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
