Clifford Raymond Sloop, 86, died Saturday, February 11, 2006, at the Asheville Health Care Center in Swannanoa. Mr. Sloop was a native of Cabarrus County and was a son of the late Whitson Washington Sloop and Ethel Furr Sloop. He was an Army veteran of WW II and was retired from the Army Corps of Engineers. He is survived by nieces, Cheryl Liner of Black Mountain, Judy Winge of Waynesville, and Nancy Abernethy of Charlotte and a nephew Steven Sloop of Columbia, SC. Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. Fr. James M. Swatzell at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte. His family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.

  1. I worked with Ray for many years at Fort Norfolk. We bowled together, worked together, and partied together. He was well-liked by everyone at the Fort. We have missed him at Engineer’s Day the past few years, and were wondering how he was doing and where he had moved. Just wanted to let you know that I thought a lot of him and to send my heartfelt sympathy.
