Annie Jo Taylor Scott, 88, affectionately known as “Mimi” to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many others who loved her, passed away on June 19, 2026. She was born on December 8, 1937, in Cullowhee, NC.
Annie Jo grew up in Cullowhee and attended McKee Laboratory School, where she graduated. She later moved to Asheville before eventually settling in Leicester, NC, where she made her home. She devoted her early years to raising her children as a homemaker before going on to a long career in retail, working at The Piece Goods Shop, Sears, and Belk, where she retired in 1998. In her free time, she loved to travel, shop, and tend to her flowers. She was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church of Asheville and later attended Freedom Baptist Church. Above all, Annie Jo was known for her sweet and loving spirit.
On March 17, 1957, she married the love of her life, Leroy “Papaw” Hubert Scott. Together they shared 59 years of marriage until his passing in 2016. Annie Jo and Leroy raised two children, Yvette Scott Smith and Jack Leroy Scott, and built a family legacy that brought her great joy throughout her life.
Annie Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy; her son, Jack; her parents, Claude Hamilton Taylor and Alice Alzora (Pressley) Taylor; and her sisters, Doris Hagan and Mary Alice Holder.
She is survived by her daughter, Yvette (Marvin); daughter-in-law, Grace Kang; granddaughters Ashleigh Smith Rogers (Jon) and Erica Riane Shelton (Ryan); granddaughter, Delia Grace Yoonhee Scott; great-grandchildren, Carmen Leigh Rogers and Nolan Scott Shelton; sister, Christine Fisher; brothers, Wayne Taylor (Vera), Terry Taylor (Carolyn), and E. Steven Taylor (Jan); along with brother-in-law, Carlos Holder.
A receiving of friends will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home, 1401 Patton Ave, Asheville, NC 28806, with a service to follow. Pastor Kellen Griffin, Freedom Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will take place afterward at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory, 901 Aiken Rd., Asheville, NC 28804.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America in Annie Jo’s memory.
Annie Jo’s gentle spirit, warm smile, and unconditional love for her family will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
