Alfred Michael “Opa” Schwander, 76, of 751 Bryson Road, Candler, died unexpectedly Thursday, July 3, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Schwander was born in Bronx, NY, and was a son of the late William and Camille Frances Morgan Schwander. He was an Army veteran of WW II and was retired from the NY Telephone Co. He had lived in Buncombe County since 1990 and was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and of the German Luncheon Group.
He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and is survived by his wife of 45 years, Anni G. Schwander; two daughters, Frances Lance and her husband Christopher of Fletcher and Susan Morris and her husband Chad of Etowah; five grandchildren, Sheryl Stefanik, Evan Lance, Morgen Lance, Christopher Morris and Jesse Morris; and two brothers, Raymond Schwander of New York and Robert Schwander of Arizona.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Fr. Roger Arnsparger at 11:00 am Monday at St. Barnabas Catholic Church. Military graveside rites will follow at Calvary Churchyard.
His family will receive friends from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian, 72 Long Shoals Road. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. At other times the family will be at the residence.
