A. Darrell Miles, 82, of Mills River, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2006, after a six month illness. Mr. Miles was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Lillie Worley Miles of West Asheville, and a son, Alan J. Miles of Raleigh. He was a 1941 graduate of Lee Edwards High School and graduated from Asheville-Biltmore College in 1943, before entering the armed services. He was a 1948 graduate of The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he majored in chemistry and minored in mathematics. He served his country in China and India during WW II and retired in 1984 from the US Army Reserves with the rank of Major. He retired from American Enka in 1979 with 30 years of service. He then became vice-president and general manager of American Circuit Breaker Corporation and then vice-president of Challenger Circuit Breaker, from which he retired in 1988. He was a member of Mills River United Methodist Church. He is survived by his loving wife, Hattie C. Miles of the home and two daughters, Janice M. Arden of Etowah and Carol M. Davis of Fletcher, and a grandson, Brian W. Arden of Etowah. The funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Jock Ollis and Paul Thompson officiating. Members of the Enka High School JROTC will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be at Green Hills Cemetery. His family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mills River Fire and Rescue, 121 School House Road, Horse Shoe, NC 28742-9742.

  3. Dear Aunt Hattie, Words fail me as I try to convey my sadness that Darrell is no longer with us. I will miss him. I will miss his funny stories. One could always expect a good laugh when Darrell was nearby. He tried so hard to overcome each health issue; I admire his tenacity. Please know that I mourn with you. I hope to see you soon.   5. Our deepest sympathy on this loss of a childhood friend. Many a day of play and laughter with Darrell, who lived between Majestic Avenue and Dorchester Avenue in West Asheville (once so incorporated). Though Darrell was somewhat older, I spent several afternoons with him discussing childhood dreams and/or building model airplanes. Always thought the world of him for taking that little time with a ‘youngster’. Yes, I delivered groceries to them also. May God love and protect him and his family forever.
