Asheville Butterfly TrailWilliam Rankin “Bill” Penland, 70, passed away Thursday, July 2, 2020, at his home.
A native of Buncombe County he was a son of the late Hubert Rankin Penland and Louise Laughter Reemes. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Bob Penland and John Penland.
Bill was a graduate of Erwin High School and was a retired long distance truck driver.
He is survived by his sister, Anne Nehme of Salem, SC; aunt, Ronda Hall, nephews, Bryan and Jonathan, niece, Michelle, and great nieces and nephew, Lucas, Hailey, Candace and Lexie.
Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Penland Chapel Cemetery, Leicester. Facial masks and social distancing will be required.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Childrens’ Research Hospital.

Bill was a very nice person he was always nice to me he was good to my brothers and I will never forget him for that
We are sad to hear of the passing of Bill Penland. Our families have lived and worked together in the
Leicester Community for generations. Lots of history we share in what was once a small tight knit
community where everyone knew one another and helped one another whenever possible.
