W. D. "RED" HICKEY
ASHEVILLE – W. D. "Red" Hickey, 82, of Asheville, peacefully entered eternal rest after a period of declining health on Wednesday, August 11, 2010.
Mr. Hickey was born in Plant City, Florida, to the late Guy and Mae Carr Hickey. He was a resident of Buncombe County where he and his wife, the late Bonnie C. Hickey, raised their two surviving daughters, Patty Fisher of Arden, NC and Mary Beth Lehnert of Franklin, NC. He graduated from Warren Wilson Junior College and, with his wife, was a long-time businessman and owner of Red Hickey's Alignment Service. He was an active member of the Better Business Bureau and the West Asheville Business Association.
Red Hickey's Alignment Service continually supported Little League teams in the local area for a number of years, as he enjoyed encouraging children of all ages. Likewise, he loved music and as a member of Weaverville Presbyterian Church, led the singing for the Men's Bible Class for many years.
Mr. Hickey will be remembered for his lasting legacy of attention to details, his work ethic, and his generosity through tirelessly donating time, energy, and skill in his area of professional expertise and business. He was also an avid gardener which came from a long time family heritage of farming in Florida.
In addition to his two daughters and their husbands, he is survived by 2 granddaughters, 2 neices, and 2 nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Reverend Sam McGinn officiating. Interment will follow at Ashelawn Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Home for Children, 80 Lake Eden Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711, or to Gideon's International, PO Box 1007, Asheville, NC 28802.

I used to go to Red’s and watch him work. When not working, he would let me look over that old truck that he kept by the alignment bay in the shop. A few years later, I bought a truck from a guy that told me that it ate tires, and had been checked by the best guys in town. I took it to Red, who had never seen it. He kept it overnight, and the next day, I picked it up. That was about five years ago, and it is still running on the tires I bought at that time. Also, I am still running the tires at the pressures that Red recommended.
Asheville has lost a real original.
Patty and Mary Beth
I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with Red in the early 80’s. He was so thoughtful, honest, and caring to everyone. A perfect gentleman and a pleasure to work with. The best Boss I ever had. My love to you all

Dear Patty and Mary Beth,
After thirty four years, I still remember your dad’s sweet smile. Now that he is with Christ in heaven, that smile must be even sweeter and bigger now. It’s wonderful to know that you will see that smile again.
