December 7, 1943 ~ June 12, 2024

Born in: Fletcher, North Carolina
Resided in: Fletcher, North Carolina

Walter ‘Buddy’ McMinn won his battle with cancer and earned his heavenly reward on Wednesday, June 12.

Buddy was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma Praytor McMinn, his father Vernon ‘Bunny’ McMinn, his brother Vernon McMinn Jr, and his nephew Michael McMinn.

Buddy was a lifelong resident of Fletcher, St John’s Rd and then Williams Rd. He served proudly in the USAF during the Vietnam era and never forgot any of his friends he made during that time.

Buddy worked at Ball Brothers for 30 years and made many lifelong friends and maintained those friendships even after retirement, but one special was his Ball Twin, Bruce Sexton, who he used to prank at work and on fishing trips. We recently found out that he and Bruce and a few more Ball buddies liked to race their cars on 4 lane roads after work. Many of his Ball friends have passed on but he never forgot them or their impact on his life. He retired from Ball and then promptly went back to work. Buddy’s hobby was always working on one project or another and helping others as often as he could. There was not a lot that Buddy couldn’t fix and we will miss that experience and knowledge.

Buddy never met a stranger and had friends all over the world. If you weren’t his friend, you would be soon. Buddy was an avid walker and spent many hours and covered many miles at Fletcher Park with two of his best friends, Danny King and Benny Hylemon. He also loved spending time at his home at Lake Russell and all the fishing trips he went on with friends and family. He was especially thankful for his lake neighbors and friends, Jerry and Alice Higdon who always looked after things in his absence.

Buddy is survived by his wife of 61 years, JoAnn Lindsey McMinn, daughters Donna (Mark) Mueller, Christina McMinn, Amanda (Brandon) McGuire, son Jason (Christina) McMinn and honorary son, Mark Jones. He is also survived his sisters, Jane Peek (Junior), Ruth Baker, Patsy Jones, Phyllis Whitaker (Ted), Martha Dietz (Don) and Camie Robles (Robert) and his brother Calvin McMinn (Marie). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews that he loved as his own.

Buddy’s world was his family, he was always proud of his big family, it made his heart swell with pride, but he made sure to instill kindness, morals, personal responsibility and work ethic in all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Nothing was better to him than having children, Donna, Tina, Mandy and Jason, grandchildren: Emily, Jayme, Cody (Kaylee), Jordyn (Connor), Cassidy, Casey, AbbyJo, Michael, Easton, Jaison (Micah), Cain (Emily), Cecil and Jorgia and his great grandchildren : Emma, Porter, Phineas, Caleb, Aubree and Turner running around just being kids. He often said he would have every one of them move back home, if it was possible.

It is impossible to capture the love, laughter and the adventures that are the dash between his years. He was an incredible man and we will honor what he taught us and the legacy he built.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:30 AM on Monday, June 17, 2024 at Fletcher First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00-11:30 AM prior to the service. Burial will follow at Shepherd Memorial Park.

Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.

  1. Worked at Ball with Buddy. He was always fun to be around. I still remember him as box maker. Prayers for family and friends.

  2. Buddy was one of the nicest people I have ever met in my entire life. He love him with my whole soul. He was such a beautiful soul.

  3. Remember falling asleep in your chairs and under the cars with papaw miss him so much. Love the advice he gave every time we worked on something. Love you so much

  4. There aren’t enough words to describe how awesome of a man my Papaw was. He would go out of his way to help a stranger in need. He’s the one that bought me a bunny at the flea market because I cried for it, and the same man that dragged me all across the lake one summer trying to teach me how to ski. I’m going to miss him fussing about how many tires I blow through and letting my gas tank get to a quarter of a tank. He’s gone, but will NEVER be forgotten.

  5. That though the radiance which was once so bright be now forever taken from my sight. Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass, glory in the flower. We will grieve not, rather find strength in what remains behind. William Wordsworth What remains behind is a lot of people that love you and many people who’s life is better because they knew you. I will miss you forever and I can’t wait for our picnic up there.

  6. I very seldom got to see Buddy but being around him just for a short time he made me feel like I knew him from when I was a young boy each of you are in my thoughts and prayers

  7. Buddy was a good man. I always enjoyed talking with him. He sure will be missed. Joann and family is in my thoughts and prayers. Love you all.

  8. Buddy was a special person and was family. He was always kind to everyone he knew. We miss the family picnics when our kids were young at North Mills River with so many McMinn’s in attendance, it felt like a Reunion, rather than just a picnic. He will missed by all who knew him. Our heartfelt prayers are with Joann and their entire Family.

  9. My heart goes out for the 🌅 McMinn family, Budd was our daughter’s father in law, he was a good person, willing to help in any way he could, I will also remember his smile, any time you would go to visit him and Joann he had a smile, say come in and stay awhile. He will be truly missed. Prayers are going out to all of them.

  10. just know that God is close bye, lean on him for comfort and strength, remember that hugh smile that buddy always had for you! my prayers are with all of you. God bless.

  11. I never got the pleasure a meeting Buddy prior to him getting sick. But even during his sickness, he was always polite and incredibly tough. What I will never forget is the commitment and love of his children shown to him during those hard times at the end. What an amazing family
