Vergie Parker Stubbs, 83, departed this life to begin her life with Jesus Christ on Thursday, November 18, 1999, at the Hospice Solace Center.

A native of Buncombe County and resident of 655 Brevard Road, Mrs.
Stubbs was born November 2, 1916, to the late James V. and Annie B. Parker.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius W. Stubbs and a
brother, William P. Parker.

Mrs. Stubbs graduated from Venable High School and Asheville
Normal Teachers College.  She retired in June, 1979, from the Buncombe County School System after teaching for 32 years at only two schools,
Venable and West Buncombe Schools.

She was a life member of the National Education Association
and was a member and officer, including president, of the Buncombe County Unit of the North Carolina Education Association and North
Carolina Association of Educators, and a member of the Buncombe County unit of Association of Classroom Teachers.

Mrs. Stubbs was an active
member of Reeves Chapel United Methodist Church, having served 25 years as lay leader.  She was an
active member of the United Methodist Women, serving as the first president of the Women’s Society of Christian Service.

In her retirement she was a member and volunteer of the Old
Buncombe Genealogical Society, a member of the Asheville/Buncombe County Retired School Personnel, and a member of the Iota Conclave of
Kappa Kappa Iota, a national teachers sorority.  Honors she received include state delegate to NEA convention, member of Who’s Who in the Methodist Church in 1966, and Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America in 1973.

Survivors include a
daughter, Sandra Stubbs Galyean of Winston-Salem, three sons, Adrian Stubbs and his wife Wilma of Marion; Donald Stubbs and his wife Nancy of
Summerfield, NC, and Ronald Stubbs of Greenville, NC;  six grandchildren, Darlene Davis and her husband Mark, Rene’ McClain and her husband
Glenn, Beverly Galyean, Dr. Cindy Stubbs and her husband Dr. Paul Frank, Mark Stubbs and his wife Maria, and Jason Stubbs;  three great-grandchildren, Kaila and Kendra Davis and Michael Barajas;  and four step-great-grandchildren, Lauren and Leah McClain and Clarissa and Julius
Dela-Cruz;  three brothers, J.V. Parker and his wife Alene of Camden, SC, George Parker and his wife Hilda, and Clarence Parker and his wife June of Asheville;  five sisters, Frances Stubbs, Pauline Parker and Ruth Penley of Asheville, Barbara Rogers of Brevard and Peggy Powell and her
husband Hollis of Tampa, FL.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 pm Sunday at Reeves Chapel
United Methodist Church with the Rev. Phillip Hurst officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center, PO Box 16, Asheville, NC 28802, or to Reeves Chapel United Methodist
Church, c/o Pauline Parker, 147 Brevard Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

Her family will receive
friends at the church from 1:30 - 3 pm Sunday and also immediately following the graveside service in the church fellowship hall.

Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is in charge of the
arrangements.

  1. It has been a long time since I have seen any of you, but I can’t forget such wouderful family. I am sorry to hear about Mrs. Stubbs.
    My sympathy to all the family.

  2. Mrs. Stubbs was a very memorable teacher for me. She straightened me out in 5th grade at WB. I’ve always remembered her fondly.
