Born in: Fairview, NC
Resided in: Fletcher, NC

To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. On Friday, September 15, 2023, Thomas Eugene “Gene” Bishop, 90, left this old world to be in his heavenly mansion with Jesus.

Gene was born and raised in Fairview and attended Fairview High School. He was a part of the FFA (Future Farmers of America). He was known as a “man of few words,” but was voted class flirt his senior year.

Upon graduation, Gene worked for the A&P Grocery Stores where he met Louise Johnson. They wed and Gene joined the Air Force. After completing his term, they moved back to Fairview and had two children, daughter Gina and son Mark.

After 40 years of marriage, God took Louise home. Gene continued to be faithful in church. He attended his high school reunion where he reunited with his high school sweetheart, Nellie Youngblood. They were married for 21 years until Nellie was called home earlier this year.

Gene is survived by his two children: daughter, Gina Bishop, and son, Mark Bishop (Paulette); grandchildren, Bret Bishop, Justin Bishop, Kari Bishop, Mandy Bishop, Libby Bishop, Addy Bishop, Rolyn Bishop, and Cati and Jon Schweitzer; and two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Jarod Marsingill. Other family members include step-children, Danny Youngblood (Mary) and Diane Youngblood, several step-grandchildren, Phillip Youngblood (Shasha), Amy Youngblood and Megan Ramsey; and several step-great-grandchildren, Cassidy Souther (Austin), MaryGrace Youngblood and Zac Youngblood.

Rejoice with the family on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. at Hoopers Creek Baptist Church for visitation with the service following at 7:00 p.m. Graveside services will be Wednesday September 20, at 11:00 a.m. at Cane Creek Cemetery, Graveyard Road, Fairview.

Daddy, we love you; keep the light on, we’ll be home soon.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Had lots of memories of you. Carolyn and I always talking at Blue Ridge CampMeetings each year. We’ll see each other again. Praying for the family. Ricky and Carolyn Wright

  2. Even though we are a far away, the family was always with us. For me, John Bishop and my brother Gerald Bishop the memories stay strong.

  3. Mark and family so sorry for your loss. I will always remember the smile your dad had at each greeting. The loss of a parent is very hurtful but the memories eventually heal some of the hurt. My mom thought of you as 1 one of her own. You and Jay kept her on her toes for awhile. Please take care give your family my love. If there is anything I can do let me know. Luv y’all. Be strong.

  4. Our heart and prayers are with you during this time of loss. It is our hope that knowing that your dad is with Jesus brings you comfort and joy. This isn’t good bye but see you later! We love you.

  5. Gina and Mark I’m sorry for the loss of your father I remember that smile of his. Billy arrived a few days before Gene did what a reunion we will all have one day.
