Thomas Cosby Batte, 92, passed away peacefully at his home in Asheville, NC, on June 2, 2024.

Born October 3, 1931 in Asheville, NC, to Mary Cosby Batte and Benjamin Leslie Batte. He is predeceased by his parents, his sister, Margaret Batte Hamilton, and brother, Leslie Howard Batte.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Kay “Micki” Batte; son, Gregory Thomas Batte and wife Cindy Batte; daughter, Ann Marie Batte Clayton and husband Tommy Clayton; step-daughter, Virginia Brockmiller; sister-in-law, Betty Sakson; grandchildren Matt, Jesse and Gregory Batte, Megan Gilbreath, Ryan Byerly, Kiersten Moore, Kaylyn Richards with their respective wives and husbands, and six great-grandchildren; and nieces, Beth Giankouros, Pat Cherry, Sarah Tomlin and their families. The love Tom had for his family was unconditional and never went unnoticed.

From the time he was a teenager, Tom’s passion and love was aeronautics building model airplanes as a boy and serving as an AF Flight Line Mechanic during the Korean War. Using the GI Bill he attended NC State and received his degree in Aeronautical Engineering. From there he moved to Florida and began his career at Pratt Whitney Aircraft Military Engine Division. After serving numerous years as Project Engineer working many programs including the F14 Tom Cat Navy military engine upgrade, he ended his career in 1990 as Project Engineer on the F22.

In his retirement years he continued his enjoyment of building and flying model airplanes, playing golf with, by his account, some of the best friends he ever had, and fly fishing with his children. He enjoyed traveling with Micki to Europe and in their RV visiting most of the United States including Alaska and several Canadian provinces.

He stated that his time working at Pratt Whitney was the best of his life and he had no regrets with his chosen career. His love for his children and his grandchildren knew no bounds and his great grandchildren were a joy. He stated many times that his greatest love was his wife, Micki, and it showed. His wry humor will be terribly missed by his family.

  1. Tom and I had a special relationship involving chocolate. I asked him one time which was his favorite – dark chocolate or milk chocolate? He just grinned and said chocolate!
So from that time until two days before his death I was his chocolate pimp. Love you Tom.

  2. I only knew Tom for a short time, but I enjoyed every time that we were all together. His good humor and wit always made me smile and Matthew always had such good words and stories to tell about his time together. He will be missed. With sympathy and love,

    Cathleen Batte’

  3. Micki – so very sorry to hear about Tom. A great guy who will be missed by all. Sending loving thoughts and prayers to you and your family. May you always remember the endless beautiful moments and may they help ease your pain. Love, Sharon & Ron (Smaldone)

  4. I met Tom in the 70’s as I was the Navy’s program manager for his program. Early on I realized he was one of the good guys because he was always straight with me on what was going on. I’ve enjoyed my friendship with Tom and Micki over the years.
Lean on those wonderful memories from such a special relationship you and Tom had now.

  5. I remember Tom as a Square Lake neighbor, a co-worker and as a friend. And maybe best in John Winfree’s Batman cartoons. Rest in peace Tom. Barry Romoser

  6. Oh Mikki, you’ll hear the sorry word so much but that’s what is felt. You two were such a well-matched couple and Gary and I are some of the many you two included in your life. The parties and meals [was just looking at a Tom Batte recipe] were always such fun and obviously for you two hosts. Now I know why you’ve been on my mind so much lately.
    Barbara

  7. It was always a pleasant surprise to see Tom show up at a neighborhood gathering, special drink in tow. His wry, dry sense of humor with a twinkle in his eye was a particular joy to me. Thanks for all you both have done to make Cedarwood a special place to live! Hugs. Bee

  8. My name is Wesley Annas from Sawmills, NC. I to am a Korea veteran and worked as an engine mechanic. Tom and I were in some classes together at NC State. I am a mechanical engineer with an aero option. Tom and I started at Pratt Whitney on June 10, 1959 with several other class mates. I lived on Buttercup and he lived on Bluebell in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Bottom line he was my friend for many years. I am sorry for your loss. He will be missed. I retire on 8/3/2023 as my job was my hobby. Love Engineering as did he. God Bless.

    • Wesley, I just read this. What an amazing history you have with Tom. You might have some fun stories. How is your retirement going? I hope you are well. Micki
