Thelma Joy Whitaker King, 86, of Asheville, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2016, at Givens Highland Farms. Born in Buncombe County to the late Zeb V. and Daisy Creasman Whitaker, she was a bookkeeper with the Buncombe County School system. She was an active member of the Biltmore Order of The Eastern Star, and volunteered with the the ABCCM/Veteran Restorative Quarters. She is survived by two sons, Philip Martin of Boone, and Kim R. Martin and his wife, Kimberly, of Sunset, SC; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 12 Noon at Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road. Pastor Karen Doucette will officiate and burial will follow in Bethesda UMC Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Bethesda UMC Cemetery Fund, 315 Old Haw Creek Rd., Asheville, NC, 28805.

  3. Sending condolences to the family. I worked for Buncombe County Schools and knew Thelma for several years. She was faithful to attend our retirement ladies luncheons until she could no longer do so. I pray comfort and strength for each family member. RIP Thelma!
