Talmadge Tony Phillips, 83 of Asheville NC passed away on Wednesday, December 9, 2020. He was born on September 3, 1937 in Madison County, NC to the late Hubert Phillips and Minnie Cutshall Phillips.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lily Rice Phillips (2001) and a daughter, Tammy Phillips (1983). He was preceded in death by nine siblings; Claude, Inez, Zell, Charles, Quince, Emmitt, James, Shirley and Bobby.
He is survived by a daughter, Tonya Phillips and two siblings, Iola and Betty. He is survived by four grandchildren, Jason (Miranda), Tiffany (Sam), Tammy (Brian) and Tori and 6 great-grandchildren, Lily (Juwan), Alicia, Ciro, Tyra, Mason and Lucas.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and worked in Carpet Sales most of his life. He was an avid bowler and was the first person in Asheville to bowl a perfect 300 game not only once, but three times. In addition, he documented his life by writing poetry. He was a devoted Christian and a member of Elk Mountain Baptist Church. He will be greatly missed by his family.
A memorial service is planned for Sunday, December 13 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road.

I was saddened to hear about Tony passing. I got to know him with the group that met at Bojangles for lunch and always enjoyed talking and laughing with him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Tonya, I am so sorry to hear of Tony’s passing! I served him every day at Bojangles as well as he was my bowling coach for several years. He also wrote a poem for me during our bowling days. Goodness this saddens me so much! You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers! He will be so missed! Just a great man all around!
