Asheville Butterfly TrailAsheville – Shirley Greene Sales, 82, of Asheville, died Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at the Laurels of Summit Ridge.
A native of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Dennis and Annie Morrow Greene. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gary Sales, Jr. as well as a son, John Benjamin Barnwell.
Shirley is survived by one brother, S.E. “Sam” Greene of Fletcher; one sister, Thelma Wright of Asheville; one granddaughter, Jamie Lee Barnwell of Ormond Beach, FL as well as several other extended family members.
No services are planned at this time.
In lieu of flowers, her family asks that donations be made in Shirley’s memory to Gashes Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 308 Gashes Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28803.

I was close to Aunt Shirley when I was young, even spent nights at her house. RIP Auntie. Love, Di💕
My heart goes out to the family especially losing both Gary and Shirley in such a short time. At least they are together again. I will miss seeing them walk to the end of the street to catch up on what was going on with them. They were the sweetest couple and everyone in the neighborhood is saddened by the news.
This news really breaks my heart. Our street won’t be the same without Gary and Shirley walking together down the street. They were a very sweet couple and our family enjoyed chatting with them when we saw them out. This dear husband and wife are together now. We will truly miss both of them.
