  1. Perhaps no one in the family will ever see this since Calvin died 4 years ago. I am deeply sorry at this death. Calvin and I became friends at Appalachian in 1964-65. He was certainly a character, but to many of us an endearing one. He left Appalachian in 1965, and I lost track of him. Suddenly, one evening I received a phone call in the middle of the night in Charlotte, NC, where my wife and son were living. It was Calvin, calling from California. He was certainly in good spirits, and it was good to hear from him again. Sometime later he and his family, all except Gabriel, who had not been born yet, moved to Charlotte. Unfortunately, the family’s time in Charlotte was difficult, but we had the pleasure of getting to be reacquainted with Calvin and to meet his family. After they left Charlotte, I believe we saw him and his family, now plus Gabriel, one more time as they briefly visited us in the early 80’s I believe. Then, again, we kept in touch sporadically. After I retired, I decided to attend the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary to become a pastor. Calvin was pleased with this turn of events in my life, and he asked me to communicate with Christopher, the theologian and philosopher of the family. We briefly exchanged emails. But, then again no more contact. However, after my ordination in 2003, Calvin sent me an engraved passage from St. Padre Pio for whom Calvin had a very warm spot in his heart. That engraving still stands on my bedside table. We were very fond of Calvin and his family, and just accidentally discovering that he had died has deeply saddened us. We pray that the peace and comfort of God surround and embrace the family. And may all brokenness and discords be healed. God bless you all. Eternal peace grant him, O Lord; and may light perpetual shine upon him. Amen
