Ruth Irene (Bornemann) Tyson Nankey, born 1929, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on December 18, 2020 at the age of 91 in Asheville, NC.
Irene believed in the strength of family while stressing family values her entire life. Irene was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church and an accomplished businesswoman. She enjoyed traveling, golfing and bowling, ceramics and always had a beloved dog at her side. She resided much of her life in South Bend and Fort Wayne, IN, and Eustis, FL, before moving to the North Carolina area.
She was the daughter of Gerhard and Emma Bornemann of Bremen, IN, where she met and married Clayton L. Tyson, also of Bremen, IN, who preceded her in death. She later married Roger Nankey of Lockport, NY, who also preceded her in death.
Irene had three younger siblings, Martha Page (deceased), Mary Dull, and Phillip Bornemann. She is survived by her four children: Gerhard Tyson (Anya), Wellsboro, PA, Randy Tyson (Charlotte), Waxhaw, NC, John Tyson (Madelyn), Asheville, NC, and Jill Nothstine, Asheville, NC; along with 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Her family asks that memorials be made to the American Heart Association. A memorial service celebrating Irene’s life will be held in the Spring of 2021.

Irene was such a great lady! I always enjoyed her no nonsense approach to life and her wisdom. She faced the trials of life with courage and grace and the care of her family was always her top priority. She left a wonderful legacy in her children and grandchildren. I will relish my memories of her with joy.
