Roy Penley, 87, of 1045 Johnston School Road, Asheville, died Tuesday, January 10, 2006, at the VA Medical Center. Mr. Penley was born in Buncombe County and was a son of the late Samuel Martin and Anna Bell Jones Penley. He was married to Mary Alice Elkins Penley, who died in 1997, and was also preceded in death by a son, Roy “Butch” Penley and by two brothers, Sam Penley and Blake Penley. He was an Army veteran of WW II and was a retired crane operator. Surviving are two daughters, Donna McLamb and her husband, Gary, of Wilmington and Diane Meadows and her husband, Jay, of Alexander; one son, Jimmy Penley of Enka; one sister, Gracie Harris of Asheville, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, with burial to follow in the Veterans Cemetery. The Buncombe County Veterans Council will provide military honors. His family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.

Sorry to hear about My Cousin Roy Passing Away it has been along time since I seen him..I am Marie Jones Campbell Yougest Daughter Of Geter & Azalee Jones,I Have Lived In Al for about 34 yrs Now and I had Not Been able To see a lot of the Family members..But My Sister Mary Jones King called to Let me Know…and for that I am thankful..I can remember His Smileing Fase Just Like the One here The Last Time I got to see him
    So May God Bless all The Family and to Know He is at Rest with The Good Lord….And One day we will Meet Him…My thoughts and Prayers are with all of you.A Little remebrance when we were Small Mom and Dad and Us Girls would walk over to Aunt Anna’s and see all of the Family and Gandmaw Jones..We would Sing For Her and would have a Good time wadeing In the Creek..Love you all
