Robert M. Hawkins, 78, of West Asheville, died unexpectedly on Saturday, April 7, 2007. A native of Asheville, he was a son of the late Walter and Marie Reel Hawkins. A 1947 graduate of Lee Edwards High School and Asheville Biltmore College, he was a Korean War veteran and served in the Special Forces in Austria. He was retired from the US Postal Service where he served as the Western District Customer Service Representative. Mr. Hawkins was a past member of the West Asheville Rotary, VFW Post 3040, the Loyal Order of the Moose, the Asheville Toast Masters and the Black Mountain Golf Club. He was also an active member of the Buncombe County Democratic Party, Wilshire Park Community Club and West Asheville Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Lucille Llewellyn Hawkins; a daughter, Teresa Hawkins and husband Michael Burkhard; a brother, Larry Hawkins and wife Meredith; nephews, Bruce Hawkins and Daniel Llewellyn; nieces, Becky Walker, Mary Sue Fields and Sherry Reid. Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Monday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. James H. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. His family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Sunday at the funeral home and request that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made in Mr. Hawkins name to Eliada Home for Chirldren, PO Box 16708, Asheville, NC 28816 or to the Salvation Army, 750 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

  1. Lucille and Family, Words simply cannot convey my sympathy for you. ‘Rooster’ and I have had a lot of fun down through the years. The only comfort right now has to be our Faith in the Sovereignty of God and our friends. Please know I am thinking of you and will hold you in prayer.
