Richard William Farren, 71, of Candler, NC went to his heavenly home on August 8, 2023.

Although we mourn his loss, we are grateful he is with his Lord, seeing his loved ones who have gone before him.

Rick was born in Waterbury, CT to Marjorie Bowen Farren and the late William Patrick Farren on September 8, 1951. He was a tool and die maker and employed at Precision Products of Asheville, NC at the time of his death.

Rick was involved in the Kairos Prison Ministry for many years; that was his calling. He was also involved with his church Piney Mountain UMC, where he was president of the U.M.M. Rick loved the Lord and his family.

In addition to his mother, Rick is survived by his wife of 49 years, Eva Brown Farren; sons, Rick Farren (Leigh) and David Farren; daughter, Janet Burdine (Tim); grandchildren, Kayla Farren (Chase), Amaria Burdine and Zeb Holland; and great-grandchildren, Mason and Nova. He is also survived by his brothers, Billy Farren (Jill) and John Farren (Darlene); sisters, Debbie Finn (Bill), Patti Marino (Andy), Jean Wengertsman (Tom) and Denise Marino (Joe); brother-in-law, Johnny Stanley; Ray Stanley, Jackie Herron, Linda Mungo (Mike), and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Eugene and Earl.

Funeral services with Military Honors will be held on Tuesday, August 15 at 6:00 p.m. in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with Pastor Glenda Hayner officiating. The service will be livestreamed on this page.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kairos Prison Ministry.

  1. I am still in shock and fully expect to look out our window and see Rick out front, where he worked many hours making their yard beautiful. My heart and prayers are with you all. DANG, I will miss his sweet personality! I will forever remember Rick with a smile each time I see the picture of him wearing a SF jacket so I could take the photo for Tido, eating ice cream EVERY night while we were all in Maine, and saying the word DANG, as we tried to teach it to Jill.     • Uncle Ricky was such a kind man with a warm heart. It would always put a smile on my face to see him and hear his voice; he had an incredibly calming and inviting presence. That his marriage to Eva thrived for nearly 50 years is a huge accomplishment and testament to the love they had for each other. Love you, Uncle Ricky

  15. I am saddened at the loss of this sweet , funny and kind man. He was dedicated to his causes and his faith. This leaves an empty chair in worship at our church and many more places. He will be missed. May God bring comfort to the family as they go through this very difficult time .

We only met Ricky a handful of times and there was always such love and laughter (especially when wrangling run away dogs) He was one of those rare people who made you feel like you’d known him forever.
