Nicholas "Nick" Salvatore DiYorio

March 24, 1951 ~ January 16, 2021
Born in:
Salem, MA
Resided in:
Arden, NC
Nicholas “Nick” Salvatore DiYorio, 69, of Arden, died unexpectedly on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at Mission Hospital.
From Charleston, SC, where he attended St. Andrews High School “The Rock”, he was the husband of Peggy (Hamilton) DiYorio of Arden, and the son of the late George Francis and Lucia (Stanziola) DiYorio. He and Peggy would have celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary in April.
Nick was a proud US Air Force veteran, having served from 1972-1976. He worked in Communications and was stationed in Osan, Korea during the Vietnam War. He was a member of American Legion Post 70 Baseball Committee, was the Treasurer of Vietnam War Veterans Association Chapter 124, and was First Vice Commander of WNC Korean War Veterans Chapter 314.
He worked as a District and General Manager for Burger King from 1977 to 2013 with over 33 years of making a positive impact on thousands of customer’s and employee’s lives. Although semi-retired, he worked part time at Pet Source, where he enjoyed conversing with customers about their pets and having good laughs together.
Nick loved the Boston Red Sox and Carolina Gamecocks (SEC all the way!), but hated the Yankees with a passion and refused to wear anything orange. He loved Dairy Queen Blizzards, going to Folly Beach, SC, and sharing life experiences through animated storytelling.
At the age of 67, he was finally able to go to Ischia, Italy, and swim at the beach where his mother swam as a child. It had been a lifelong dream.
In addition to his loving wife Peggy, left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Angela and Jan; brothers Joe (Pat) and John (Linda); father-in-law Terry, sister-in-law Aileen (Matt) and brother-in-law Scott (Hilda); sons Michael (Mary) and Brian (Sarah); daughters Nicholi (JJ) and Alondra; grandchildren Dakota (Toni), Maggi, Gabe, and Julia; and numerous nieces and nephews. Special friends left to cherish his memory include Vicki, Julie, Isabelle, Kenneth, John, Carl, Eddie, and Adriane. In addition to his parents, he will be met in heaven by his mother-in-law Suzanne, brothers-in-law Tom and Jack, and best friends Gracie, Gerald, Jay, and Buddy.
Services will be private but a public burial at the WNC State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain will be announced in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 70 Baseball Committee, PO Box 9273, Asheville, NC 28815 or WNC Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA), Chapter 314, PO Box 595, Edneyville, NC 28792.
The best way to honor his life is to remember a time he made you laugh or comforted you in a time of need. Do the same for someone else.

There are no words to express that would begin to erase our sadness. However, we know Nick is in the presence of the Lord. Such a kind and respectful man never met a stranger. Peggy, and all of your family our deepest sympathies. Goodbye to you Nick a comrade always. As former members of the United States AF we remain brothers forever. Much love and respect to your family and God’s comforting arms around you . Love always Wayne and Pat Kasper

I will surely miss our rivalry between the Gamecocks and Tigers. Peggy, may God bless and comfort you and your family.
That is a perfect picture of Nick, it’s just the way I remember him with that eager smile and wonderful laugh. We did not see you guys often enough but we did enjoy Nick’s stories when we were together. I always admired His work and friendships with his fellow veterans. Peggy, you and Nick have raised a wonderful family. You will see glimpses of him through them. You all have so many wonderful memories of Nick to remember him by. Our family knows what it is like to lose someone to soon. You all will be in our thoughts and prayers.
Love, Mary Lynne
Nick was my cousin and was the same age. We did not cross paths too often as young people but I got to know him later. He was a great man who served God and family and country!!! He will be missed because people like him don’t come around that often. Prayers to you and your family in these days and to come. There is a big hole where Nick used to be but we honor him and the life he lived. We love you all!!!
You all are in our thoughts and prayers. I always enjoyed the banter that I had with Nick about the beach, our country and spiritual things. He was a strong believer and loved this country. I didn’t know him well but have a love for him because of our love for Jesus! He will be missed but one day we will all be together. ❤️
Dear Peggy, I am so sorry to hear of Nick’s passing. He was a good husband and father and was a friend to many. My prayers are with you and your family. May God wrap you up in His loving arms and bring you peace.
