Melissa Anne Wilson, 56, of Gerton, NC, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2025.
Born October 6, 1968 in Burnsville, NC, Melissa was a daughter of Martha Anne Basnight and of the late Farrell Wilson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gary Kurtz, who passed on October 25, 2024. She worked as an administrator in child development education.
In addition to her mother, Melissa is survived by daughters, Crystal Kurtz (Rick) and Delilah Kurtz (Harry); son, Philip Colwell (Jess); 7 grandchildren; sister, Heather Schwock (Brian); and brothers, Thomas Basnight (Kimberly) and Dylan Wilson (Jennifer).
Her family will receive friends on Saturday, August 23, at the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Avenue from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. A memorial service will follow the visitation period. Those in attendance will be invited to share memories and thoughts about Melissa.
Floral arrangements are appreciated and may be sent to the funeral home.

Melissa was one of the kindest, genuine, caring people I have met. She always had time to chat, and always had a smile on her face and a positive attitude, even when she was not feeling her best. She will be greatly missed here at Verner, and by everyone that knew her.
Melissa was a true blessing to each and every soul she encountered. She will be missed by so many. Prayers for her family through this time.
I will forever remember Melissa’s kindness, easy laugh, and her generosity in sharing her positive outlook. I count myself lucky to have known her.
