Lina Lucille Duncan, 95, of Asheville, died on Friday, June 9, 2017, at the WNC Baptist Retirement Home.
A native of Buncombe Co., Lucille was a daughter of the late George E. and Love Temperance Thomas Hughes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul L. Duncan; daughter-in-law, Terica Duncan; five sisters, Margaret Hughes, Evelyn Young, Catherine DeBruhl, Bertha Gallman, and Bernice Hughes; and brother, George Hughes.
She was the great-granddaughter of William H. Thomas, the first and only white Chief of the Cherokee. Mr. Thomas was instrumental in establishing the Cherokee reserve and remains a prominent figure in Western North Carolina history.
Mrs. Duncan was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her son, Paul L. "Champ" Duncan, II, and his adult children with Andrea: Lina Temperance Duncan, Paul L. Duncan, III, and wife Debbie and Mary Andrea Duncan-Fuller; eight great-grandchildren: Brandon, Hunter, Camryn, Trinity, Kaelyn, Twylite, Noble, and Aidan; and many loving nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Ave. with the Rev. Curtis Goforth officiating. Interment will follow at Green Hills Cemetery.
Her family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank the Hospice team of Dr. Barnhardt, Susan, Morgan, Nancy and Cindy. As well as the nurses and staff at the WNC Baptist Retirement Home.
